Wool without the hide

Not every wool slipper is sheepskin. Many are made from wool fabric: knitted, woven, or felted. They have no hide underneath, so they are often lighter and more flexible.

What felt is

Felt is wool that has been matted together with moisture, heat, and agitation, rather than woven. Boiled wool is a knitted wool fabric that has been felted. Felt slippers tend to hold their shape and feel firm.

How they compare

  • Sheepskin: deep pile, very soft, hide on the outside.
  • Felt: dense, structured, smooth.
  • Knit wool: soft and flexible, more like a sock.

Labels and sensitivities

Check how the maker describes the materials. A slipper can be part wool and part synthetic. If you are sensitive to wool, latex, or other materials, check the label and the maker's materials list before you buy.
