How a moccasin is built
A moccasin starts with one piece of leather or suede that runs under the foot and up the sides. A separate top panel, called the vamp, is stitched on over the toes. That stitching around the toe is the easiest way to spot one.

Linings
Many moccasin slippers are lined, often with sheepskin, shearling, fleece, or another pile fabric. The lining changes warmth and fit more than anything else. Check the maker's materials list to see what the lining actually is.
Soles
Some moccasins have only the leather or suede underneath. Others add a sewn-on suede pad or a rubber outsole. See the soles guide for what each means in practice.
Fit
Leather and suede uppers often soften as you wear them. A thick pile lining can compress over time. That is why many makers suggest a snug first fit. Sizing varies by brand and style. Check the maker's size chart and the retailer's return policy before you buy.
